Disneyland of War
Director Chris Smiley and Producer Mike Hanes, an Iraq War combat veteran, challenge the glorification of war and violence in our culture while exposing the propaganda of the Miramar military air show. This air show is one of many outlets where war and violence is given a warm, inviting, and exciting aura. The utter horror and brutality is never understood by so many. Promoting a positive image of war and violence to people, especially children, is extremely dangerous. There is absolutely nothing cool, exciting, or heroic about ripping limbs, burning flesh, or shredding the organs of another human being. If we expect the public to stand up against unjustified violence and warfare they need to know the true reality.

Antiwar comedy. A group of severely wounded soldiers are cheerful about their injuries. After all, it’s not like they lost their arms or legs for nothing. It was “for their country,” so that makes it okay. This film uses humor to encourage the viewer to think twice about the personal cost of war.

Gonna be a soldier
Six-year-old Joey wants to be a doctor when he grows up, but his parents explain that he has to be a soldier instead, and kill people. When Joey protests this dark future, they explain that we only kill people in other countries, and only the ones wearing uniforms. “What if they take the uniforms off?” Joey asks. Confused as to why he should grow up to kill people, Joey keeps asking more questions, as his parents doggedly explain the “logic” of war. When his father admits that it’s very sad that so many innocent civilians also get killed, Joey asks, “So, it’s *not* okay?” But his mother cheerily explains, “Of course it’s okay–as long as we’re *trying* to kill the ones with the uniforms. Will Joey’s innocence prevail? Or will his parents’ indoctrination finally wear him down?

Names On the Wall
Two soldiers fighting on opposite sides of the Vietnam War find themselves faced with a choice, somewhere between where humanity ends and war begins. Directed and Stunt Choreographed/2nd Unit Directed by two women, this film considers how we react to different circumstances depending on an array of different elements – for this story, set in front of the backdrop of one of the most controversial wars in American history. It was a war of governments, but this is a story of soldiers. Original music, tense action, witty dialogue and beautiful visual story telling down to nuanced details between the men who, by the end of the film, are more than names on the wall

A Living Bridge
I recently completed production of a feature documentary entitled “A Living Bridge”. The film takes three of our countries most polarizing issues, and allows people/human beings to tell their own stories of joy, sorrow, hopes, struggles etc. The subject matter is: Marriage – Gay & Conservative Christian – Immigration – Undocumented family – a family who has been hurt by undocumented workers – Race. The marriage and immigration stories, their hopes of love, acceptance, mutual respect and admiration are told through the eyes of a black family who has seen their share of racism and prejudice….however they have risen above it and have chosen to Love instead of hate. Their insight and determination not to hate others shows all of us the value of kindness and love. This project was filmed on location in several American states and in Mexico.
